About Me

My name is Anwar M. Farooq, and I am originally from Karachi, Pakistan.

I graduated from Karachi University with a BSc. (Honors) in Mathematics in 1972. One year later, I immigrated to the United States. I attended the University of Texas at Arlington, and Texas A&M University in Kingsville, Texas, before moving on to the city of New Orleans where I graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of New Orleans in 1984. Within months of graduating, I moved to Pomona, California, where I worked as an engineer in different companies, including Telecom Technologies, Inc. and Western Digital Corp.

Recreationally, I have made four static-line parachute jumps from an airplane. I love to travel and I have visited many countries in Europe and Southeast Asia, from Denmark, Germany and England to Hong Kong, Cambodia, Indonesia, Vietnam and surrounding countries. In addition, I have been to 30 out of the 50 states in America. After 12 years as an engineer, I moved into a teaching career and taught at Riverside Community College and Pomona Adult School. Later, I taught math and science at various middle schools in the Los Angeles Unified School district.

After teaching high school mathematics in Los Angeles, CA for 15 years, I retired from LAUSD in 2019.

As a hobby, my passion is to solve the Rubik’s Cubes. I enjoy solving every cube from 2x2x2 to 20x20x20. Converging my two passions, teaching mathematics and solving the cubes, I formed a company called STEM Cubing, Inc (www.STEMCubing.com) where STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

STEM Cubing, Inc. has been approved by the board of Ontario/Montclair School District as a provider of STEM related after-school activity. At present, I teach kids in various local schools how to solve the Rubik’s cubes using the Farooq method. With this method, kids as young as 3rd graders can learn to solve the cube.

Steve Wozniak

This photo was taken on a cruise ship where I met Steve Wozniak, the co-founder of Apple Computers. I am in light blue t-shirt with my wife in red sweater. My two kids are in front of us in light blue t-shirts. My brother is in red with his two kids next to mine.
